PhD Paid Internship Program

Graduate Research School has developed a new PhD Paid Internship Program, launching in early 2026.

The program will provide eligible PhD candidates with the opportunity to undertake an internship that compliments their research and supports their development skills.

While an Industry Partner will provide the industry setting and expertise to the candidate, GRS will provide competitive financial support, designed to recognise the additional time and effort required to complete an internship while maintaining progress toward PhD completion.

Program overview

The PhD Paid Internship Program offers funding for PhD candidates to undertake a 60 day internship with an Industry Partner as part of their candidature.

There are limited funded opportunities each year with 2 application Rounds per year.

2026 Application Rounds:
  • 1 April – 15 May
  • 1 October – 13 November
  • 60 days in total (can be completed in a block or spread over a period)
  • Focus on research and development activities or aligned with research area
  • Be undertaken with an external organisation
  • Candidates must be in their first 18m of candidature to apply
  • Industry Partner agreed to internship for application
Eligibility requirements and application forms will be published closer to launch

Internship requirements:

Funding options:

  1. Cash payment equivalent to 3 months of standard PhD stipend (aprox $10k), paid in the internship period or
  2. Stipend extension of 3 months added to end of the candidates existing candidature (where applicable).

Funding option available to candidate will depend on their enrolment and scholarship status.

Have a potential industry partner already?

Candidates who have a potential industry partner already are encouraged discuss first with their supervisors and to contact GRS as early as possible.

Early engagement allows GRS to:
  • Provide advice on eligibility and timing of internship
  • Support discussions with the industry partner
  • Assist candidates to be ready for the application round

Candidates do not need to have all details of potential internship finalised to contact GRS.

  • Funding amounts and timing
  • Templates for all required legal documents
