About the museum collection

The Australian National Museum of Education keeps an on-site repository at the ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ. It also comprises a national network of school museums, consolidating archival material held in school museums throughout Australia

The ANME is one of Australia’s leading repositories of historical educational documents. Our collections include textbooks, scholarly journals, teaching records, registers and materials, award certificates, biographies, school histories, and memorabilia.

How our collection is organised

Our varied collection is categorised into five themes, each of which may comprise manuscripts, artefacts and source documents. ANME has developed a set of collection profiles, a classification of the holdings of the Museum that are intended to assist in accessing and using the collection for historical research.

Physical collection

The Collection based at the ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ contains over 5,000 texts (two-thirds relating to 19th Century education in Australia), 7,000 paper items including educational ephemera and 500 objects. Many people across Australia have donated significant items to the collection.

National Registry of School Museums

National Register of School Museums

The National Register of school museums was created by ANME as a means of showcasing the countless school museums found across Australia. Most can be found in rural communities seeking to preserve their heritage, or are preserved in pioneer villages in heritage school buildings, or on the grounds of schools with a current enrolment.
