Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Discuss the complexity of the health care system and how this affects patients and optometrists;
2. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication techniques when interacting with patients and other health professionals;
3. Describe the social, economic and other factors affecting the communities need for eye-care services;
4. Explain the legal and ethical obligations involved in optometric practice and maintaining registration as an optometrist; and
5. Investigate occupational and other vision standards and how they relate to patient care including counselling patients on the suitability of their vision for occupational and vocational tasks.

Readings will be supplied in electronic form and students can download and print via the computer labs prior to attending class. Students may choose to bring a laptop and use the university internet access to read materials.

Artificial intelligence
The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit is classified as Restricted.
Students must not use GenAI in completing assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus, which may be used to seek feedback on drafts.
Use of GenAI to generate, paraphrase, summarise, or translate assessment content is not permitted.
Students remain responsible for the originality, accuracy, and academic integrity of all submitted work. A Learning Validation Conversation may be required if the authenticity of a submitted assessment is in doubt.
Special assessment requirements
To successfully complete Professional Practice in Optometry, students must:
- Submit all assessment items;
- Achieve a final aggregate (overall) mark of 50% or higher.
This unit aims to develop professional and communication skills in preparation for practice as a health professional. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, communicate respectfully, and engage constructively in learning activities.
Regular attendance and active participation in tutorials and classes are strongly encouraged, as these support the development of competencies aligned with AHPRA optometric standards.
Any behaviour or action that compromises patient safety, professional standards, or respectful participation in the learning environment may impact a student's performance in relevant assessment tasks.
For virtual classes, students are expected to participate actively and communicate professionally with peers, staff, and invited speakers. The use of cameras is encouraged to support interaction, although reasonable adjustments may apply. Alternative forms of participation (e.g. chat, polls, verbal responses) may be used where appropriate.
Contract cheating
Contract cheating, including academic outsourcing or ghost-writing, is a form of academic misconduct in which students submit work that has been drafted or produced by someone else and claim authorship of it. This includes, but is not limited to, using a third party to complete part or all of an assignment or assessment item on behalf of the student.
Students are at risk of contract cheating if they ask someone to:
- complete an assignment for them
- substantially edit their assignment
- do university work for them, with or without compensation
- check test or quiz answers
- sit a test or quiz for them
- provide someone with their ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ login details
Students may also be at risk of contract cheating if they provide information to people or organisations outside ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ, such as assignment questions, lecture notes, marking rubrics or marking guides.
ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ considers contract cheating serious misconduct, which may result in suspension or exclusion from the University. As an education provider, ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ also has mandatory reporting responsibilities under National Law and may be required to notify AHPRA if conduct by a registered health practitioner, including a student with registration, constitutes notifiable conduct, including a significant departure from accepted professional standards. Contract cheating may result in ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ submitting a mandatory notification to AHPRA.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.
Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.
ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ students have to complete the annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).
ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Inclusion and engagement
Students with a Reasonable Adjustment Plan are encouraged to communicate with the Unit Convener early to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for assessment and participation in this unit.
Participation requirements
This unit includes participatory learning activities designed to support the development of competencies aligned with the Optometry Board of Australia entry-level standards.
Students are expected to attend and actively participate in scheduled classes, tutorials, and practical sessions, as these contribute to learning and preparation for assessment tasks.
Where participation is required for specific assessment tasks (e.g. presentations or practical activities), this will be clearly outlined in the relevant assessment instructions.
Required IT skills
Students are expected to use ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ Learn Canvas, conduct library searches, use Microsoft Office or equivalent software for word processing and presentation preparation, and submit assessment materials electronically.
In-unit costs
Students are expected to have access to a non-programmable scientific calculator for use in relevant learning activities and assessments. Students may also wish to print electronically provided materials for their own study. There are no additional compulsory in-unit costs.
Students are expected to have access to a computer or suitable device for Canvas access, online resources, and assessment preparation.

Additional information
Pursuant to the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, registered optometrists and education providers have mandatory notification obligations where there is a reasonable belief that a student undertaking clinical training has an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm.
Education providers may be required to make a mandatory notification in relation to a student if the provider reasonably believes that the student has an impairment which, during clinical training, may place the public at substantial risk of harm.
Registered practitioners also have mandatory notification obligations in relation to students in similar circumstances.
Concerns raised within the Discipline of Optometry, or by clinical preceptors, will be reviewed through the appropriate University and Discipline processes before any reporting action is taken.
Students should be aware of their professional obligations associated with student registration.
