The Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance (CDDGG) is the world-leading centre for scholarly and applied research in deliberative governance. Our fields of expertise are diverse, but we advance a common research agenda that examines how deliberation – inclusive, reasonable, and reflective communication – can empower people to shape political decisions that affect their lives.

We are globally recognised for our research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration and culture of mutual support.

The Centre regularly publishes books with prestigious university presses, such as Oxford and Cambridge university presses, and journal articles that shape the scholarly debates in the field. Since moving to the ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ, over the past 8 years we published 14 books and over 150 journal articles and book chapters that advance the theory, practice, and methodology of deliberative democracy.

As a research-intensive unit, The Centre has a strong track record of receiving and completing grants from the Australian Research Council. These grants include a Laureate Fellowship, a Federation Fellowship, Future Fellowship, Discovery Early Career Research Fellowship, six Discovery projects and two Linkage Projects.

In addition to cutting-edge scholarly research, The Centre is also committed to applied research on deliberative democracy. We have collaborations with various industry partners. This involves the research, design and facilitation of public deliberation on important issues, including the Australian Citizens’ Parliament, the Global Citizens’ Assembly on Genome Editing, the Global Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency, and Connecting to Parliament.

The Centre offers world-class research training for PhD students, runs the Deliberative Democracy Summer School and hosts a seminar series on deliberative democracy and related topics. It is also the home of the flagship journal of the field, .

The Centre welcomes PhD students and visiting fellows specialising in deliberative democracy research from various theoretical, disciplinary, and methodological traditions. We are especially interested in engaging with scholars working on democratisation, global governance, environmental politics, social movements, identity politics, mixed methods research, and political theory.
