What our PhD candidates are doing

Observing long COVID symptoms

When Michaela McGrath caught COVID-19 in 2022, she thought it might be like a mild cold or flu and take her down for a week or so – she didn’t know that it would change the entire course of her life.

Challenges Muslim women face in the workplace

Senada Meskin wrote much of her PhD thesis sitting on the floor of her son’s taekwondo class. ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ alumna spent countless hours there, watching him train, while typing away on her laptop about the challenges highly-educated professional Muslim women face in Australian workplaces.

Overcoming boundaries to education

Every stage of Elizabeth Low’s academic journey has been met with challenges and disruption – including housing insecurity, health issues, and caring responsibilities for her mother, husband and both children. Resilience pushed her to keep trying.

From government policy to grassroots research

It was during Jessica’s postgraduate degree that she became interested in issues of food and water security. Her master’s thesis focused on an in-depth case study of a food-producing garden established for Burmese refugees in Canberra.

Investigating young onset dementia

ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ researcher, Nic Lawlis, investigating young onset dementia receives $30,000 grant to improve patient outcomes.

Hope for species diversity

PhD candidate at the ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ, Emily Stringer, research has been focusing on genetic variation of two small mammal species in the Simpson Desert.
