Sometimes it is hard to meet new people, or to find opportunities to practise speaking in English. We wanted to provide a chance to help you with this. Our English Conversation Club is an informal time, not a structured class. In a small group, we talk about a different topic each meeting, with a native English speaker. Improve your English by practising your speaking and listening, and make some new friends along the way! Anyone is welcome join this activity. The English Conversation Club is a free activity, and especially for international students or visiting scholars from overseas – but anyone who wants to practise their English is welcome.We are currently holding the English Conversation Club online using Microsoft Teams, and at the same time meeting in person in 1C100, as a mixed-mode event.If you are interested in joining the activity, please contact the organiser, Craig Johnson, to confirm details (times and location can change).

Whether you are a brand new or a returning student, speed friending is a great way to meet new people and maybe create some long-lasting bonds!  You’ll be discussing the most important questions in life, such as your favourite movie genre, ‘pineapple on pizza; yes, or no?’ and ‘do you scrunch or fold toilet paper?’, nah, we are just kidding about that last one, well maybe... but you'll find out when you come along to make some new connections! If you love meeting new people as much as we do, you can come to as many Speed Friending sessions throughout the day as you'd like!  What to expect when you turn up you may ask? Well, come along and you will see us set up inside of the ������Ƶ Refectory, the main hall in Building 1. There will be screens with questions and long rows of chairs ready. We'll provide directions throughout so no need to worry about not knowing where to go. Our lovely staff will also be around, ready to assist you at all times. The Front Man invites you, yes you, to participate in Squid Game! Have you ever found yourself watching Squid Game and thinking “I could totally survive that” or “It would be so fun to try one of those challenges – just without the dying”? Then this is the perfect O-Week event for you! Put your skills to the test and complete a series of challenges, both mental and physical, and see if you would actually survive Squid Game in real life.  Set up in the ������Ƶ Refectory, Squid Game will have numerous challenges – some you’ll know from your childhood, others from the show and others will be a surprise. Completing the challenges successfully will reward you and losing them will have consequences… but don’t worry, if you fail a challenge you’re not eliminated and can just continue onto the next game!  Squid Game will have numerous physical challenges that may involve running (such as red light, green light), however, these games can be adapted to work for all abilities. The event can be found in the ������Ƶ Refectory, the main hall in building 1. Join us in the Sports Hall at lunchtime every Monday throughout semester for a casual match, starting in O-Week. Whether you're spiking like a pro or just figuring out which way to rotate, everyone’s welcome! Coming into university a little later? Do we have the event just for you! With Study Skills and Student Mentors available and the chance to meet fellow students in the same boat, you will be able to ask any questions you may have about studying at ������Ƶ and make some friends too! So come to the first floor, Level B, of the library at 5:30pm and enjoy a range of food and drinks while mingling with those making a similar leap back into study! The event is very easily accessible as you can walk straight off the concourse from the middle of the university, straight in to building 8. Face your fears and scare away your O-Week woes and worries with our very own Haunted House! Tickets are $5 for students, or come visit the ������ƵX office during the day to get your free one! The event is located at the ������Ƶ Hub, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������ƵX Student Lounge. Time for the biggest event of O-Week: the ������ƵLifex O-Week Market Day! With stalls from ������Ƶ social, academic, cultural and sporting clubs, there’s no doubt that you will be able to find your people. If none of them interest you, there will be plenty of ������Ƶ teams and local organisations who will be able to help you out!  If even that doesn’t interest you, perhaps free stuff will? ������ƵLifex, our clubs and other local organisations will be offering freebies on the day. So why wouldn’t you want to come? If you can only attend one event of O-Week, this is your one stop shops for everything ������Ƶ! Market Day has a range of stalls that fill ������Ƶ Refectory and line ������Ƶ Concourse in the centre of campus. This event has a high volume of crowds and can be quite busy in peak times. If you would like to join us when it's quieter and less crowded, we recommend either coming at the start (from 10am) or towards the end (before 2pm). There will be lots of free goodies from businesses, internal and external from the University, that are most certainly worthwhile grabbing. Get ready for takeoff! Join us straight after Market Day on the ������Ƶ Sport Walk of Fame bridge (between the Refectory and Building 4) for the ultimate Paper Airplane Contest! Swing by the ������Ƶ Sport Market Day stall between 11 and 2 to grab your paper, craft your creation, and see how far (or fancy) you can fly. There’ll be prizes up for grabs, so bring your best throw and your wildest design ideas! The bridge is fairly easy to access, with entry via the Refectory or heading down from the gym. Anyone can trivia but only the fearless can be great and win the many prizes up for grabs at the ������ƵLifex Pixar Trivia!!!! We’re letting you cook with your question answering skills at the ������ƵBarx. Are you UP to the challenge? Say ka-chow as you answer questions so quickly you’ll be thinking “I am speed”. Just keep swimming through the challenge to win the amazing prizes we have for first, second, third place and our mini game. Tie some balloons to your team as you rise to the top of the Trivia Leaderboard. This is what you need to know; the ������ƵBarx is placed under Cooper Lodge, across from the on-campus Oscars Café and Coffee Grounds, which is easily accessible with flat ground and no stairs to get into the building. There will be four total rounds, and one mini game between the second and third round. Get your creative juices flowing with airdry mini Clay Crafting at the ������ƵX Student Lounge! Need a study buddy? BOOM! You can make one. Need a stand to hold your O-week memory pictures? BANG! Want new mini decorations for your room? BAM! The options are endless for what mini figures you want to make.  Clay Crafting will be set up in the ������ƵX Student Lounge, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������Ƶ Hub. It is accessible via elevators located by Mizzuna Café. When you arrive, there will be tables set up with different coloured clays. You can craft from your imagination or follow provided instructions for inspiration.  The Social Intensity Scale is 2/5 as you can scale this event however you want. No skill required and plenty of laughs guaranteed, so bring your energy and team spirit, and we’ll take care of the rest!  The event is accessible from ramps on the Northern end of the lawns. The games will be played on grass, with the ������Ƶ Sport team happy to work with you on the day to adapt play to suit your needs and comfort. The Social Intensity Scale for this is 3/5 as you'll need to talk strategy with your team and engage with ������Ƶ Sport throughout. O-Week is on a roll with Free Cinnamon Scrolls! Stop doom-scrolling, and start cinnamon scrolling as you enjoy a deliciously warm free cinnamon scroll on the ������Ƶ Concourse!  Find us on the concourse where we will be serving the cinnamon scrolls until stock runs out! Put your skills to the test with the ������Ƶ Sport Drills & Skills Challenge! Head to the Concourse Lawns where you'll tackle a series of fast-paced physical challenges - think speed, coordination, and even something to test your memory. It’s all about giving it a crack and having fun, but if you're feeling competitive, the fastest overall time will score a prize. Come solo or bring some mates to cheer you on and see who’s got the quickest moves on campus. The event is accessible from ramps on the Northern end of the lawns. Make (or lose) some friends at our first ever Arcade Night in the ������Ƶ Refectory! Bust a move in Just Dance, race your way to victory in Mario Kart, run a kitchen in Overcooked or fight your friends in Super Smash Bros. The ������Ƶ Refectory will be transformed into the Arcade of your dreams! Roaming around the Refectory you will find games to play, arcade machines, table tennis and air hockey. Don’t want to play games? There will be places to lounge, socialise and enjoy watching others play.  Arcade Night will be a ������Ƶ Refectory extravaganza, found in the main hall in Building 1. Get ready for Pickleball Thursdays! One of the fastest-growing sports around, pickleball is fun, social, and super easy to pick up - no experience needed. We’ll be playing in the Sports Hall, which is also where we usually play weekly on Thursdays at lunchtime. Grab a paddle, learn the rules in minutes, and get into the swing of it with some friendly matches. The Sports Hall is accessible via ramps and can be found at the end of the Sports Walk of Fame in Building 4. Put your jigsaw puzzle skills to the test and go head-to-head in the first official ������Ƶ Jigsaw Duel. Compete in small teams of maximum 5 and puzzle your opponents with your speed, cooperation and talents. Teams will compete to qualify for the final, with the fastest team to complete their puzzle winning a $200 escape room voucher to continue their superior puzzle solving skills. The event is located at the ������ƵX Student Lounge, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������Ƶ Hub. Did somebody say bingooo?? We’re bringing our banging weekly game of Musical Bingo to O-week! Keep your ears out and work to identify the songs, then cross your fingers and hope you have it on your card. Tune up your knowledge, curate your perfect playlist, discover some new music and get some friends together for a fun night of music and bingo. From the craziest costumes, to the simplest of fits – release your imagination with this O-Weeks Initials Party! Come dressed as something beginning with the first letter of your name – it can be anything! Have a blast grooving to tunes and meeting new people (and guessing the first letter of their name based on their costumes). Nice to meet you Brittany the Banana! Felix, is that you as the Fox? Fancy seeing you here Peta, nice Pterodactyl costume! The Initials Party will be in ������Ƶ Hub, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������ƵX Student Lounge. If you need access from ������Ƶ Refectory or UniLodge, head to Building 2, ride the elevator down to level A and come over the ������Ƶ Hub that way. The Social Intensity Scale for this event is 5/5 due to the amount of people who will be attending and the loud music that will be playing throughout the event. Those who might not be as familiar with Canberra, this one’s for you! We will be taking a group on a guided bus tour all throughout Canberra so you can get to know all the must-see sights, including the iconic Parliament House to the infamous Questacon, and get acquainted with this beautiful city we call home. Meet us outside ������ƵBarx for pick up, where we will also be dropping you off so you can stick around and have a drink or a meal.   For this event we will meet you right outside the bar, ready to leave at 10am, just look for the two employees in ������ƵLifex shirts that will be your friendly tour guides over the microphones on the bus. The accessibility to consider for this event is the constant walking and hopping on and off a bus for a long period of time, but this can be adapted for your needs. There will also be free lunch provided on the day. Do you see the snow falling? Hear the bells jingling? Smell the air getting more and more festive? Yeah… me neither. Nonetheless it’s time for Christmas in July! Join us for a festive lunch in the ������Ƶ Refectory. Ice some cookies, feast on Christmas lunch and enjoy the celebrations!  Arrive at the ������Ƶ Refectory, the main hall in Building 1, where our Christmas themed event will be set up towards the rear of the room. Fridays are for badminton! Throughout semester we’ll have badminton running at lunchtime every Friday in the Sports Hall and this week is no exception! Whether you're a seasoned pro or a total beginner, everyone’s welcome so come on down, pick up a racquet and a shuttlecock and get playing! The Sports Hall is accessible via ramps and can be found at the end of the Sports Walk of Fame in Building 4. The ������Ƶ Sport team is happy to work with you on the day to adapt play to suit your needs and comfort. The Social Intensity Scale for this is 2/5 as you'll just need to talk to your opponent or doubles partner, plus  ������Ƶ Sport staff. Looking for people to play pick-up games with while here on campus? This is the perfect chance to challenge your mates, meet some new ones and have a bit of fun! ������Ƶ Sport and ������Ƶ Lifex are teaming up for the ultimate 3x3 Hoops event, with free food, music, and most importantly basketball! Hoops Under Lights happens next to Building 4 on the 3x3 courts there where there’s friendly and slightly competitive short games of 8 minutes. The courts are relatively easy to access although there are a couple of steps to get there. There will be music onsite and lots of loud noises with the music, whistles, players and balls. The Social Intensity Scale for this is 3/5 as the only interaction you will have will be through the team you are playing with and the attendees you compete against, however there won’t be much time for smack talking as you’ll be too busy playing. We are always flexible and willing to work with our students so we want to hear from you if there are any accessibility requirements that will make it easier to attend our event!

Studying a postgraduate degree at ������Ƶ? This O-Week event is the one to be at!  Come to the Post Grad Cocktail Hour at ������ƵBar and get to know other ������Ƶ postgraduates. Celebrate the second last day of O-Week with a laugh at Comedy Night with the Fairbairns! The Fairbairn brothers are an Aussie comedy duo known for their comedy skits, podcast and online presence.  Join us at the ������Ƶ Hub, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������ƵX Student Lounge. It is accessible from ������Ƶ Refectory via elevators that take you to behind Mizzuna Café. Get familiar with some Australian tunes, hope your votes get in and get to know some other Aussie music enjoyers! Need more temptation than just darn good music? Enjoy our Aussie food bar topped with drinks and famous Aussie snacks such as fairy bread, party pies and tim tams. Further details on the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs can be found here on the Triple J website.  Social Intensity Scale is 3/5 as is it a pretty long listening event, however, you may come and go as you please and socialise as little or as much as you want. Music will be playing for the entire time during this event.   The Hottest 100 of Australian Songs Listening Party will be in ������Ƶ Hub, which is by the P1 parking lot, across from the ������ƵX Student Lounge. It is also accessible via elevator in the ������Ƶ Refectory that takes you to behind Mizzuna cafe.

A campus Bar Crawl like no other – you are not going to want to miss it. As you’re lead through our 5 fun themed stops across campus, collect a free drink at each stop (YIPPEE!)! The bar crawl ends at our optional fifth stop - ������Ƶ's feature event, SLAM! pro wrestling. Get keen for a night you won't want to forget, but probably won’t remember... Everyone will meet at the ������ƵBarx which is placed under Cooper Lodge, across from the on-campus Oscars Café and Coffee Grounds, which is easily accessible with flat ground and no stairs to get into the building. You will get your free drink, settle in ready for a big night and we will then make our way throughout campus. The sites on campus where the pop-up bars are located will be all accessible, and we can work with you on the night to determine the best alternative routes. The Social Intensity Scale for this is 5/5 as you will meet a range of people throughout the large group that will be attending and your group of friends. We are always flexible and willing to work with our students so we want to hear from you if there are any accessibility requirements that will make it easier to attend our event! *Please note, this is an 18+ event. A valid form of photo ID (Australian driver's license or international passport) will be required upon entry.
